How to Build an Easy Matzo House for Passover
Passover is a time of remembrance and tradition, marked by eight nights of celebration with family and loved ones. As you prepare, leave the decor up to the kids—a matzo house is a fun way for them to get involved in holiday preparation while adding a whimsical touch to the table setting. Plus, made with crispy matzo crackers, gooey chocolate “glue”, and your choice of edible decorations, it serves as a tasty Kosher treat that your guests will love. Plan a visit to your local Foodtown grocery store to stock up on everything you’ll need to create these festive structures.
Matzo House Ingredients & Materials
When it comes to creating a Matzo house, there are a few necessities to stock up on to create the base of the house:
- Lightweight Cardboard—use an empty cereal box!
- Matzo Crackers—you’ll need at least 7 crackers
- Chocolate Frosting—use a kosher store-bought variety or make your own, like this Dark Chocolate Frosting from Leah Cooks Kosher
How to Build your Matzo House
Depending on the age of your child, you may need to lend a hand in the construction of the actual house. Don’t worry! It’s not as hard as you may think…
- Begin by folding the cardboard into a 6×6 cube shape of a house, using scissors as needed. Martha Stewart suggests trimming the top two flaps of the cube into triangles and taping the two uncut flaps onto it along the cut angles to create support for a roof.
- Use the chocolate frosting to “glue” the house to a base sheet of cardboard. Then, frost each surface of the house.
- Attach matzo crackers to each frosted surface of the house. You’ll need four full crackers for each side, two full crackers for each side of the roof, and one cracker cut in half diagonally to form triangular pieces for the front and back of the roof. Think of it just as you would a gingerbread house.
- Let set for about half an hour before moving on to decorating.
Kosher Food Decorations for a Matzo House
Once the matzo house is constructed and set, it’s time to decorate! Use chocolate frosting to “glue” your choice of the following kosher ingredients to your matzo house…

- Dried Fruit, such as apricots, banana chips, or apple rings
- Mini Marshmallows
- Licorice Ropes
- Rock Candy
- Jelly Fruit Slices
- Jelly Beans
- Red Hot Candies
- Toffee Bars
- Chocolate Kisses
- Foil-Wrapped Chocolate Coins
